The concept of accessibility builds on the basic tenets of the disability rights movement, which advocates for equal opportunities and equal rights for people with disabilities. In order for such opportunities and rights to be safeguarded for all in our society, equal access to social, political and economic life is needed, which goes beyond physical access, and includes access to tools, services, and facilities. One of the core arguments against the use of machine translation (MT) by translators, especially those working in creative fields, is the machine’s so-called ‘inability’ to handle the metaphorical use of language to evoke images and feelings. Another is the stifling of creativity on the part of the translators when asked to post-edit machine-translated text as opposed to creating a new version of an original that creates an equivalent effect to the audience in another target language. The high level of expertise and complexities involved in the dubbing process are legendary in media localization workflows, which have remained the same since dubbing was first used as a localization strategy in the 1930’s, right after the ‘talkies’ became the dominant film production method in the market.
