Spotlight on Accessibility – interview with Mike Veronis

The concept of accessibility builds on the basic tenets of the disability rights movement, which advocates for equal opportunities and equal rights for people with disabilities. In order for such opportunities and rights to be safeguarded for all in our society, equal access to social, political and economic life is needed, which goes beyond physical access, and includes access to tools, services, and facilities. As part of our Spotlight Series, we spoke to Mike Veronis, AppTek’s Lead for Accessibility Solutions about AppTek’s new spinoff GoVoBo, a solution designed and developed specifically for the deaf and HOH community in collaboration with Gallaudet University.

One of the core arguments against the use of machine translation (MT) by translators, especially those working in creative fields, is the machine’s so-called ‘inability’ to handle the metaphorical use of language to evoke images and feelings. Another is the stifling of creativity on the part of the translators when asked to post-edit machine-translated text as opposed to creating a new version of an original that creates an equivalent effect to the audience in another target language. AppTek's Evgeny Matusov offers his thought on the subject when asked to contribute to a workshop on the topic of “Literary Machine Translation as a Human-Machine Dialectic”, organized by the University of Liège.
